site of Alderwood Collegiate Institute - demolished

photos taken 2015-12-27:

We are now in Alderwood - south of the QEW, west of Kipling - corner of Treeview Drive and Lanor Avenue, below Evans Avenue.

Look behind you - to the south

Alderwood Collegiate Institute used to stand in the now mostly empty field.

The old elementary school, Douglas Park Public School, still stands and is still in use.

ACI opened in 1955.

I was a student there from 1961 until 1965 for grades 9 through 12.

In June 1965 I graduated with my Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

In July our family had moved to Ville St. Laurent on the Island of Montreal.

If the weather was "reasonable" our physical education teachers used to have us run laps around the football field.  I was never fast, but I had endurance.

Standing on Valermo Drive across the street from where the main entrance to Alderwood Collegiate used to be.

The parking lot was to the far left.

There used to be a circular driveway entrance that took you to the theatre and the cafeteria entrances.

The main entrance was in the middle, with offices to the right, then the library when looking north across the street.

The goal posts are still standing.

The parking lot is still there.

Other than the new sales office, the only structures left are a storage container and a portable toilet.

The school which was closed several years ago was demolished months ago.  Redevelopment of the land here has taken a long time.  It may take many more years before any new homes are constructed.

School's out - permanently!
